Rules differ by place
Cities, counties and neighborhoods set their own rules. Nothing here replaces checking with the local building or codes office, which is the final word on what your project needs.
Often regulated: stairs and railings
Stairs, handrails and guardrails affect safety, and many places require permits or inspections for new or replaced ones, especially in rental and commercial properties.
Often regulated: structures
Carports, canopies, mezzanines, platforms and anything that carries people or equipment often need plans and approval, sometimes from an engineer.
Fences and gates
Height limits, setbacks and materials for fences and gates are often controlled by zoning and HOA rules. Gate operators may need electrical permits.
Hot work rules
Commercial buildings and some sites require hot work permits and fire watch records. Property managers can tell you the process.
How we help
We build to the details you provide, point out where rules commonly apply and work with your inspector or engineer when asked. We do not pull permits for homeowners unless the project arrangement says so.
Ask your local codes office before building anything that carries people or defines a boundary.
