Rugged, wind-tolerant welding for thick steel, rusty parts, outdoor jobs and structural repairs where reliability matters.
Stick welding, also called shielded metal arc welding, uses a coated electrode that creates its own shielding as it burns. It does not need bottled gas, which makes it ideal outdoors and in wind, and it tolerates rust, paint and dirt better than other processes.
That ruggedness is why stick is a staple for farm repairs, structural steel, heavy equipment and field welding. We use it where reliability on thick or imperfect metal matters more than appearance. Different electrodes suit different jobs, from deep penetration to smooth finishing.
With no external shielding gas to blow away, stick keeps working where other processes struggle. It is a dependable choice in open fields.
Rust, mill scale and paint reduce weld quality, but stick tolerates them more than most processes. We still clean back where we can.
Rod type, size and amperage matter. We select electrodes for the steel and position, and keep them dry for best results.
Low-hydrogen electrodes absorb moisture from the air, and wet rods cause weak, porous welds. We keep rods in a heated, sealed container and replace any that have been exposed.

It works outdoors, in wind, on thick steel and on less than perfect surfaces. For field and structural work it is hard to beat.
Better than most processes, but cleaning still improves the weld. We grind back to bright metal where possible.
Yes. Properly done, stick welds meet demanding structural requirements.
It is harder. For thin sheet we prefer MIG or TIG.
Moisture ruins low-hydrogen rods and weakens welds. A heated container keeps them dry and ready.
