Swing gates
Swing gates open on hinges, single or double leaf. They are simple and strong but need clear space to open. Slopes and snow-free clearance matter, and heavy gates need strong posts.
Sliding gates
Sliding gates roll along a track beside the opening. They suit tight spaces and level drives, but the track must stay clear of debris and the frame needs room beside the gate to retract.
Cantilever gates
Cantilever gates slide on rollers without a ground track, with a counterweighted tail. They work well on uneven ground but need a long supported length and strong support posts.
Walk gates and farm gates
Walk-through gates are lighter and simpler. Farm gates are usually heavy-duty with simple latches suited to animals and equipment.
Style and security
Open pickets offer view and airflow, privacy panels block sight and ornamental designs add character. Height, picket spacing and latch design affect security.
Posts and foundations
Every gate is only as good as its posts. Deep footings, sized steel and proper spacing prevent sag. Motorized gates need power conduit and safety sensors planned before concrete is poured.
Choose the gate type by space, slope and weight first, and by style second.
