Hard steels and overlays that resist grinding wear: where they pay off and how to weld them without losing their hardness.
Abrasion-resistant steel, often called AR plate, is made hard so it resists wear from rock, gravel and soil. It is used for bucket liners, dump bed floors, chutes and cutting edges. Its hardness is what gives it life, and what makes it harder to cut and weld.
Welding AR plate takes care. Too much heat can soften it, and welding cold can crack it. Low-hydrogen filler, preheat and sensible heat input protect the base metal. Hardfacing overlays offer another route, building a hard layer onto an ordinary steel surface.

Welding must be controlled.
Reduces cracking risk.
Hardfacing builds a hard surface.
Liners are meant to be replaced.

They suit different uses. Plate is a replaceable liner, while hardfacing builds protection onto existing parts.
It depends on the material and use. Plate often lasts several times longer than ordinary steel in abrasive service.
