How Custom Metal Fabrication Works: From Sketch to Install

The steps of a custom fabrication project: concept, measurements, material choice, cutting, welding, finishing and installation.

Start with the problem

Describe what the piece must do and where it will live. A gate, a stand and a bracket share the same steps but need different answers about strength, weather and look.

Measure and sketch

We measure the space or the part and make a sketch with dimensions. This is the time to adjust sizes, styles and details, before any steel is cut.

Choose materials

Steel, stainless or aluminum, in tube, bar, plate or sheet: the choice follows strength, weight, weather exposure and appearance. We explain the tradeoffs.

Cut and fit

Pieces are cut to length and angle, ground clean and fitted together. Tack welds hold them while we check square, level and dimensions.

Weld and finish

Final welding goes in a sequence that limits distortion. Welds are ground as needed, and the piece is cleaned, primed and painted or coated.

Install and adjust

The finished piece is installed and adjusted on site. A walk-through confirms fit, function and finish. Small changes are easy now and costly later, which is why measuring first matters.

Our advice in one sentence

Spend extra time on measurements and the sketch; it saves the most work later.

Questions

Quick answers.

How long does fabrication take?

It depends on size and complexity. We give a timeline after measuring.

Can I change the design midway?

Early changes are easy. After cutting and welding, they take time.

Do you provide drawings?

We provide dimensioned sketches for approval. Engineered drawings come from your engineer when required.
